The Family Statement That Said Everything
In a statement released to The Hollywood Reporter, his family wrote: “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed away in his sleep from natural causes. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”
The statement did not shy away from the difficult years either. A follow-up from his representative, Rebecca Taylor, added that while it was no secret Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.
That detail matters. Because whatever the headlines said about him over the years, the people closest to him want you to know he was fighting. And he was not giving up.
A Career That Meant More Than People Realised
Beyond Buffy, Brendon also played the recurring role of Kevin Lynch on Criminal Minds, a character that earned him a whole second generation of devoted fans. But it was always Xander that defined him, and he knew it.
In his final years, Brendon had turned to painting and art, regularly sharing his work on Instagram and Facebook, sometimes asking fans for support to cover medical bills and art supplies alike. In 2023, he revealed he had been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and had suffered a heart attack. He had also undergone multiple spinal surgeries. He kept showing up anyway.
Just six days before his death, Hulu officially passed on a Buffy revival that would have brought Sarah Michelle Gellar back to the role. It was a complicated ending to a complicated chapter, and one he had strong feelings about publicly.
The Buffy Family Is Grieving Again
This loss lands with a particular weight because it is not the first. Brendon is the second member of the Buffy cast to die in recent years, following Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy’s younger sister Dawn Summers and passed away in 2025. Co-stars Alyson Hannigan and Emma Caulfield have already shared public tributes mourning their friend.
Brendon was born in Los Angeles as an identical twin with his brother, Kelly Donovan, and originally took up acting to help overcome a stutter. He was married and divorced twice. He leaves behind a legacy that was messier and more human than most, and that is exactly why so many people loved him.
