Pokémon Champions Release Date Confirmed and It Is Only Two Weeks Away — Here Is Everything You Need to Know

  • Pokémon Champions officially launches on Nintendo Switch on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, with a free-to-play model that has the Pokémon community both excited and nervous
  • Switch 2 owners will get a free visual upgrade at launch, and anyone who downloads the game early will receive a free Dragonite straight to their in-game mailbox
  • A mobile version for iOS and Android is also coming later in 2026, with full cross-platform play between Switch and mobile confirmed from day one

The wait is almost over, and the Pokémon community is absolutely buzzing right now.

Pokémon Champions is scheduled to release on Nintendo Switch on April 8, 2026, followed by a port to iOS and Android later the same year. The game has been in the pipeline since it was first teased over a year ago, and now that a hard date is locked in, the excitement is real. It is a spin-off of the Pokémon video game series focused entirely on multiplayer gameplay, developed by The Pokémon Works, a joint venture between The Pokémon Company and ILCA. Think of it as the dedicated competitive Pokémon experience that fans have been asking for essentially forever.

What Kind of Game Is This Actually?

Pokémon Champions is expected to be similar in gameplay to the Pokémon Stadium series, featuring turn-based strategy battles that use familiar mechanics, including Pokémon types, abilities, and moves. If you grew up playing Stadium on the N64, that comparison alone should be enough to get your attention.

Players will be able to choose between Single and Double Battles, with three online modes available, including Ranked, Casual, and Private. So whether you want to grind your way up the leaderboard against strangers or just have a low-stakes battle with your friends, there is a mode for you. Pokémon HOME compatibility is confirmed from day one, meaning you can transfer your favourites in from Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A. That is a genuinely big deal for anyone who has spent years building their perfect team.

The Free-to-Start Catch

Here is where things get a little complicated. Pokémon Champions is a free-to-play game, meaning you can download and play it without spending a penny, but there is an in-game currency system for permanently recruiting new team members, adjusting Pokémon moves and stats, and purchasing costumes and music. The community’s reaction to that has been, to put it politely, mixed.

A Starter Pack bundle will also be available on launch day that includes the base game along with added Pokémon storage space, an extra battle song, and more in-game benefits. Whether that represents good value is the conversation happening across every Pokémon forum right now.

The Competitive Scene Is Going All In

This is not just a casual game launch. The Video Game Championship circuit is transitioning to Pokémon Champions as its standard platform for all competitive matches from April 8, with the Indianapolis Pokémon Regional Championships from May 29 to 31 becoming the first major live event to use it exclusively. The game will also be the platform for the North America International Championships in June and the Pokémon World Championships in August. That is about as serious a competitive endorsement as you can get.

Among the Pokémon confirmed to appear are Mega Meganium, Mega Emboar, and Mega Feraligatr, all originally introduced in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, each with brand new, never-before-seen abilities. The competitive meta is going to look very different very quickly.

April 8 is two weeks away. Make sure your Switch is charged.
