In June 2024, something happened that had never occurred before in Martin County’s history. Budensiek was elected to the position of sheriff without a single opponent, the first time in the county’s history that an open sheriff’s seat went uncontested.
He was officially sworn in on January 7, 2025, meaning he had been on the job for less than three months when Tiger Woods crashed his Range Rover just miles from his office’s jurisdiction.
His predecessor and longtime mentor, retired Sheriff William Snyder, publicly stated his confidence in Budensiek, saying he genuinely believed Budensiek would be the best sheriff the community had ever seen.
