In the same interview, Roan revealed the words of advice her grandfather shared with her, which she constantly thinks about today. “There is something that he said that I think about every move I make with my career, business, whatever,” she revealed. “He says, ‘There are always options. It is not a scarcity of opportunity.”

Her grandfather, Dennis Chappell, was an original partner in Proctor-Jarvis-Chappell Insurance Agency, which later became PJC Insurance of Springfield. Here is where the story gets even more interesting. The second half of her stage name did not come from a person. It came from a song. A very old, very specific song about a wild horse that cannot be tamed.
Roan told BBC Radio 1: “I go by Chappell Roan because my grandpa’s name was Dennis Chappell, and then Roan is a reference to his favourite song called The Strawberry Roan.” The Strawberry Roan is an old Western song about a pinkish-red horse.
The “Strawberry Roan” was composed by cowboy poet and songwriter Curley Fletcher. It is the kind of song that most 18-year-old pop stars have never heard in their lives. But Dennis Chappell loved it. And so his granddaughter took the title word and stitched it permanently into her identity.
A strawberry roan, for those unfamiliar, is a horse with a reddish coat mixed with white hairs, producing a distinctive pinkish shimmer. The song tells the story of a horse that every rider believes they can break, but never can. A wild, beautiful, untameable creature. Is it a coincidence that Chappell Roan has become famous for being exactly that kind of artist? Probably not entirely.

The moment that crystallized this shift for her happened during a UK tour. She shared on Q with Tom Power: “I had a drag queen open for me in London named Crayola. She was like, ‘Oh, you are a drag queen, you’re not just getting makeup on, you’re a drag queen,’ and I was like, ‘Oh my god,’ like that was very altering. I really have taken that on as an identity, and it’s been very freeing to be like, ‘Oh, Chappell Roan is my drag project,’ and I think that’s also helped personally to separate it as a job.”

It was her grandfather’s birthday. And in a post on Instagram on that same day, Chappell Roan wrote: “Dear Papa, I wish you could see what we have created. I named this project after you to honor your name and your never-ending love. ‘Chappell’ is your last name, a name that brings me so many lovely memories. ‘Roan’ references your favorite old western song, ‘The Strawberry Roan.'”
She chose his birthday as the day the world would meet her most personal work. That is not a coincidence. That is a deliberate, intentional act of love.
And there is another layer. Roan recalled in 2018 that the School Nights EP was released on the first anniversary of her grandfather’s passing. She said: “I think he had something to do with that somehow, because we couldn’t have planned it.”
