Taylor Sheridan has done it again. The man behind Yellowstone, 1883 and 1923 just quietly dropped one of the most star-studded casts on television, and people are already talking. The Madison is a heartfelt study of grief and human connection following a New York City family in the Madison River valley of central Montana, described as a prestige drama with cinematography that matches the best on the big screen. But before you hit play, here is every face you need to know.
The Stars Leading the Show
Michelle Pfeiffer plays Stacy Clyburn, the matriarch of the family, a rich city dweller whose entire world is upended when a horrific plane crash takes the lives of both her husband and his brother. Confused and drowning in grief, she packs up her family and relocates to a rugged Montana ranch. Pfeiffer is already being talked about as an Emmy contender for this one, and based on early reactions, it is not hard to see why.
Kurt Russell plays Preston Clyburn, Stacy’s late husband and the head of the family before the tragedy. Although he is deceased at the start of the show, he appears across all six episodes, likely through memory and flashback sequences that piece together the family’s history. Getting Russell on board was no easy task either. Scheduling conflicts with Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters nearly cost the show its leading man entirely, but Sheridan and Pfeiffer devised a plan to film his scenes separately, which required requesting an early season two renewal from Paramount+ executives just to make it work. That is how badly they wanted him for this role.
The Supporting Cast You Need to Know
The Madison cast does not slow down after the two leads. Beau Garrett plays Abigail Reese, Stacy’s eldest daughter and a divorced mother trying to balance grief with the chaos of raising children. Elle Chapman plays her younger sister Paige McIntosh, a woman used to a pampered New York lifestyle who finds the move to Montana particularly jarring. Patrick J. Adams plays Russell McIntosh, Paige’s husband and an investment banker who has followed a strictly traditional life path from the start.
Matthew Fox appears as Paul Clyburn, Preston’s deceased brother and a self-reliant outdoorsman who once owned the very Montana ranch where the family eventually settles. Ben Schnetzer plays Van Davis, a local rancher who also serves as the area’s sheriff, acting as the bridge between the Clyburns and the rural community around them. Kevin Zegers plays Cade Harris, a neighbor to the family’s new Montana property.
And then there is the surprise addition that nobody saw coming. The teaser trailer quietly revealed that Will Arnett had joined the cast in a recurring role. He plays Dr. Phil Yorn, a New York-based therapist helping Stacy process the sudden loss of her husband and brother-in-law. Will Arnett in a Taylor Sheridan drama is not a combination anyone predicted, but here we are.
Is It Worth Watching?
Early reactions suggest yes. Viewers have praised the show for characters that feel real and layered, with pacing that balances drama, tension and quieter emotional moments that hit hard. It currently holds a 65% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 72% audience score. It is slower and more introspective than Yellowstone, but that appears to be exactly the point.
The Madison has already been renewed for a second season, and although it currently takes the form of a limited-run series, cast and crew members remain hopeful for more. Given the names attached to this project, that hope seems well founded.
